Uniting for Peace Spring Conference and AGM 2013
Linking 2Ds: Democracy and Development for Global Peace

A large gathering of members and supporters of Uniting for Peace gathered at Wesley’s Chapel on Saturday 20th April to take part in Uniting for Peace AGM and Spring Conference 2013. The event started with a welcome address by Chair, Vijay Mehta. After that, tributes were paid to Uniting for Peace late President, Lord Peter Archer, Peer and Solicitor General for 1974-1979 and a much respected parliamentarian. Brian Cooper, Frank Jackson and Vijay Mehta praised the outstanding work of Lord Archer on peace, human rights and interfaith work.

The morning session of the conference was the AGM in which reports were given by Chair Vijay Mehta, treasurer, Abdul Muhib and Coordinator and Interfaith Secretary, Brian Cooper were followed by election for the Executive Committee for 2013/2014. Three more new members to the Executive Committee were welcomed, the names are: Marek Zielinski, Lucy Mbugua, Andres Wiesner.

Two films, one on Democratic Republic of Congo by Chris Yates and Kate Downey and the other one, Change the World about the 4D for World Peace Campaign were shown. Afterwards, a vibrant Q/A followed which included suggestions for future programmes for Uniting for Peace.

In the afternoon session, there were a distinguished panel of speakers which included Dr. Thomas Davies, International Politics Lecturer in City University London, Jean Lambert, Member of European Parliament, Abi Rhodes, representative from Bertrand Russell Foundation, Brian Cooper, Coordinator and Interfaith Secretary from Uniting for Peace and Vijay Mehta, Chair of Uniting for Peace gave talk on the conference title – Linking 2Ds: Democracy and Development for Global Peace. All the speeches will be posted on the website as and when we receive them from the speakers. A report of the conference with photos will be published in the next issue of Uniting for Peace newsletter. A lively Q/A session followed in an open forum afterwards in which comments for future programmes for Uniting for Peace are suggested by the audience.
